Responsibilities

  • Guide teams in making, documenting, reviewing, and connecting architectural decisions across their domains.
  • Contribute to the weekly architecture advisory forum by challenging proposals, clarifying tradeoffs, and improving ADR quality.
  • Identify and coordinate cross-cutting concerns such as contracts, versioning, identity, permissions, tenancy, data isolation, observability, and migration sequencing.
  • Run technical spikes and research to reduce architectural and roadmap risk, documenting findings and recommendations.
  • Embed with teams and projects to build reference implementations, ship production code, diagnose difficult failures, and improve codebases.
  • Address performance, data integrity, cross-service failures, distributed-system issues, and legacy migration challenges.
  • Partner with engineering leaders, product, delivery teams, customers, and integration partners on sequencing, deployment architecture, security, integration, and performance.
  • Help engineers develop stronger architectural judgment and improve the quality of technical decisions across the organization.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience building and operating production software, including senior, staff, or principal-level responsibility.
  • A record of owning work end to end from design through shipped and operated production code.
  • Depth in multiple layers of the stack, including backend services, data modeling and persistence, web or mobile architecture, cloud infrastructure, and delivery pipelines.
  • Experience with event-driven or event-sourced systems, explicit domain modeling, and architecture enforced through code or tests.
  • Experience evolving versioned APIs, SDKs, plugins, or extension-platform contracts without breaking dependent parties.
  • Familiarity with distributed data tradeoffs including replication, consistency, event ordering, versioning, and multi-region failure modes.
  • Experience with incremental migration, coexistence, and deprecation in large long-lived systems with active customers.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including design documents, ADRs, and RFCs.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cowork, and Copilot, together with evaluation or reliability harnesses.
  • Ability to work effectively across time zones and become productive quickly in unfamiliar systems.
  • Preferred experience includes retail, point-of-sale, omnichannel commerce, telecom retail, extension platforms, payments, PCI, tokenization, terminal integrations, SOC 2, multi-tenant SaaS, or major product replatforming.

Benefits

  • The role is primarily distributed across Canada, with teams in India and elsewhere, and requires effectiveness across time zones.
