Base Salary
$162k - $290k/yr
Responsibilities
- Evaluate hardware components, including SoCs, flash, RAM, and sensors, and validate choices on prototypes
- Bring up new hardware platforms by configuring I/O, enabling SPI, I2C, UART, and BLE, debugging system initialization, and validating designs
- Develop peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, power-management layers, and connectivity-management layers
- Optimize protocols and hardware management for long battery life in sensors and gateways
- Collaborate with product, full-stack, mobile, electrical, cloud, and quality engineers to deliver complete products
- Design systems that collect sensor data, detect meaningful events, and structure recorded data for efficient analysis across devices
- Lead technical work and provide designs, reviews, and guidance that raise the effectiveness of the engineering team
- Drive consensus across teams, document technical decisions, and deliver iteratively at scale
Requirements
- 8+ years building firmware for resource-constrained systems shipped to and operated by real customers
- Fluency in C and ability to analyze compiler behavior, linker maps, stack traces, and memory issues
- Substantial bare-metal and RTOS experience, including scheduling, memory, timing, mutexes, and semaphores
- Experience bringing up new boards and debugging hardware-software issues with electrical engineers
- Fluency with SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC interfaces
- Experience using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, or RF spectrum analyzers
- Staff-level experience leading work across hardware, firmware, cloud, and quality from concept through shipment
- Ability to drive cross-team consensus, make cross-layer technical trade-offs, document designs, and conduct post-mortems
- Experience iterating quickly with automated testing and maintainable code
- Preferred: deep BLE expertise and PHY-level understanding
- Preferred: cellular IoT experience with LTE-M or NB-IoT, power-state management, and FCC, PTCRB, and carrier approvals
- Preferred: embedded security experience with secure boot, firmware signing, cryptography, and key management
- Preferred: OTA and device firmware update experience at fleet scale, including A/B partitions and rollback
- Preferred: embedded Linux experience with Yocto or Buildroot, kernel drivers, and device trees
- Preferred: CAN and J1939 experience on commercial vehicles
- Preferred: Python and Bash tooling experience and hardware-in-the-loop test automation
- Preferred: experience with electronics manufacturing, factory processes, quality assurance, and production issue resolution
