Responsibilities
- Define and operate SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets with product and engineering partners.
- Build and improve metrics, structured logs, distributed tracing, alerting, and upstream instrumentation.
- Lead incident response, act as incident commander when needed, and drive blameless postmortems into completed engineering work.
- Reduce operational toil through automation, self-healing behavior, improved defaults, and internal tooling.
- Harden production systems through failure testing, capacity and performance work, and resilient design.
- Improve release safety through progressive delivery, feature flags, canaries, rollbacks, and tested migrations.
- Improve developer experience by addressing platform and internal-tooling gaps that create operational friction.
- Partner across product, platform, security, compliance, and engineering teams on reliability and risk tradeoffs.
- Mentor engineers, review complex designs and pull requests, and establish technical standards.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ownership of services in production under real load and failure conditions.
- Experience defining and operating against SLOs and SLIs and using error budgets to guide decisions.
- Experience leading incident response and producing postmortems that result in durable improvements.
- Hands-on experience with observability tooling, including metrics, structured logging, and distributed tracing.
- Deep system design experience with distributed services, asynchronous messaging, storage tradeoffs, API design, idempotency, consistency, backpressure, and graceful degradation.
- Significant industry experience building and operating production software systems in a high-ownership engineering environment.
- Comfort with modern cloud environments such as AWS and GCP, containerized workloads, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Demonstrated technical leadership through cross-team architectural influence, mentoring, and engineering judgment.
- Pragmatic approach to maintaining high reliability standards while supporting fast delivery.
