Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and scale controllable generation and test-time compute algorithms for foundation world models.
- Develop multimodal conditioning and critic-guided flow or diffusion steering methods.
- Investigate multimodal sensor and semantic latent conditioning and representation alignment for holistic world simulation.
- Use learned realism critics and autoresearch workflows on large-scale TPU clusters to evaluate closed-loop realism, long-tail scenario synthesis, and multimodal consistency.
- Write clean, modular, and well-tested JAX code for simulation and world-modeling codebases while collaborating with research teams.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a PhD in computer science, machine learning, robotics, or a related technical field, with expected graduation between December 2027 and August 2028 and at least one academic term remaining after the internship.
- Strong tensor implementation and debugging skills in Python and JAX/Flax or PyTorch.
- Hands-on experience training and modifying modern neural architectures such as Transformers, diffusion or flow-matching models, or deep reinforcement-learning and critic networks.
- Hands-on research experience in controllable generative world or sequence modeling and inference-time scaling, or multimodal spatiotemporal representation learning and closed-loop simulation, with familiarity in the other area.
- Preferred: first-author publications at leading machine learning, computer vision, or robotics venues.
- Preferred: experience with multi-agent closed-loop simulation, counterfactual or adversarial traffic generation, or Sim2Real discriminator and critic stabilization.
- Preferred: experience profiling and scaling distributed training and inference on TPUs or multi-node GPUs, including XLA compilation, vectorized batched rollouts, and memory optimization.
Benefits
- Hybrid onsite internship position.
- Interns are eligible for the company’s benefits programs, subject to eligibility requirements.
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the role is filled.
- Full-time summer internship for students returning to a degree program for at least one academic term.

About Waymo
Waymo develops the Waymo Driver, a full-stack autonomous driving system, and operates the Waymo One robotaxi service that offers paid, driverless rides in select U.S. cities. The company monetizes through ride-hailing fares and partnerships integrating its technology on multiple vehicle platforms. Founded in 2009 as Google’s self-driving project, Waymo is headquartered in Mountain View and is an Alphabet subsidiary, with over 10 million rider-only trips and 100+ million autonomous miles on public roads.
