Base Salary

$150k - $200k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Scale the infrastructure behind Notion’s database block and Collections platform.
  • Improve database load performance, reliability, and P95 performance under higher concurrency.
  • Address high-volume writes from AI agents and larger enterprise workspaces.
  • Build backend architecture and system boundaries that other Notion teams can build on.
  • Use AI for learning systems, debugging, test generation, trace and log analysis, and implementation planning.
  • Improve infrastructure quality through architecture, observability, documentation, and platform improvements.
  • Partner with senior engineers and product-facing teams to balance internal developer needs with customer experience.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals and interest in performance, reliability, scalability, and systems operating under real customer load.
  • Curiosity about distributed systems, microservices, and data-layer trade-offs; experience in these areas is helpful but not required.
  • Practical comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript, or the ability to ramp quickly in a codebase using those tools.
  • Ability to investigate technical bottlenecks, iterate on solutions, and reason from first principles.
  • Self-guided learning style using documentation, code, teammates, and AI to build context and solve ambiguous problems.
