Responsibilities

  • Define the firmware architecture across all mobile-base controllers, including partitioning, communication buses, timing, update paths, and diagnostics.
  • Lead firmware bring-up for prototype builds, including board support packages, drivers, bootloaders, and collaboration with electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Partner with electrical engineers on board design, schematic review, bring-up, testing, and debugging.
  • Own drive-module and motor-control firmware, including current, velocity, steering, encoder feedback, and coordinated wheel control.
  • Develop firmware for power sequencing, battery-management communication, charging, docking, and battery swapping.
  • Integrate base sensors and peripherals and reliably deliver their data to robot compute.
  • Define interfaces between firmware and navigation, fleet, safety, and upper-body software.
  • Root-cause cross-disciplinary issues involving firmware, electrical, mechanical, and component behavior.
  • Build hardware-in-the-loop tests, fault-injection systems, production-test firmware, and diagnostic tools.
  • Set coding standards, review practices, test expectations, and release processes for AMR firmware.
  • Mentor AMR embedded engineers, review designs, and help grow the firmware team.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of embedded firmware development experience, including leading firmware for a battery-powered motorized product through production.
  • Hands-on motor-control firmware experience with FOC, current sensing, and encoders, ideally for traction or steering drives.
  • Mastery of C/C++ on microcontrollers, RTOS design, real-time scheduling, interrupts, DMA, and peripheral drivers.
  • Practical board bring-up and bench-debugging experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, and schematics.
  • Experience with power sequencing, battery-management-system communication, and charging.
  • Experience leading engineers through a new-product-introduction cycle.
  • Ability to influence technical direction without direct authority and partner with hardware, motion-planning, safety, and executive leadership.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for communicating complex technical risks and strategies to nontechnical leadership.
  • Preferred experience with mobile robots, AGVs, autonomous vehicles, multi-wheel steering control, functional safety development, or over-the-air firmware updates for fielded fleets.
  • Preferred familiarity with ISO 13849 and IEC 61508.

Benefits

  • On-site role at the Boston-area office, with some flexibility on office days after ramp-up.
  • Base salary range of $200,000 to $230,000 depending on experience.
  • Employee stock options for full-time employees.
  • Paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) for regular full-time employees.

About Standard Bots

51-200 employees

We believe AI-native robots are the essential power tool of the 21st century — the tool that will grow American manufacturing and help every American worker to be a force at work. You just show your robot how it’s done, and it learns through demonstration. No coding, no consultants, just unbox and deploy faster than anything else on the market. We are expanding our Glen Cove, New York facility to 70,000 square feet to scale our vertically integrated production process. We currently design almost all our own parts, including our own actuators, and we assemble every final product in-house. By 2027, we’ll manufacture everything — from metal in to robots out — right here in America. More at standardbots.com
