Responsibilities
- Own the team’s software engineering approach, including CI/CD, tooling choices, coding standards, development practices, testing, code review, and documentation.
- Set direction for internally developed automation, tooling, and integration solutions and recommend frameworks and practices that improve velocity and quality.
- Evaluate and challenge vendor software, APIs, SDKs, build and deployment tooling, documentation, testability, and operational supportability, particularly for Nokia platforms.
- Design integration solutions between the element management system and BT’s wider IT and automation estate.
- Advise on containerization, orchestration, deployment architecture, security, vulnerability management, and secure configuration.
- Define, oversee, or build proof-of-concept implementations, test frameworks, and evaluation tools, while contributing production automation and integration code.
- Mentor development and network staff in software engineering practices, design thinking, and technical decision-making.
Requirements
- Experience designing software solutions, making architectural trade-offs, translating business requirements into technical designs, and setting and adopting coding standards and development practices for a team.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git-based version control workflows, Kubernetes, Docker, and complex multi-component software platforms such as element management or operations support systems.
- Experience evaluating and integrating third-party software products and APIs, with the ability to challenge vendor approaches using evidence-based technical arguments.
- Understanding of system security principles and the ability to ensure platform designs meet security standards and compliance requirements.
- Ability to explain complex software topics clearly to technical and business audiences.
- Experience building proof-of-concept or prototype solutions using third-party APIs and self-developed implementations.
- Experience with Python, Java, and/or JavaScript is desirable.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code or network automation tooling is desirable.
- Strategic thinking about technology adoption and growing engineering capability is desirable.
- Knowledge of network element management platforms, particularly Nokia NSP, is desirable.
