Senior Software Engineer, Android
Toast, Inc.Base Salary
$125k - $254k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own the design and delivery of Android system application features in Kotlin and Java, including device policy enforcement, out-of-box setup, firmware updates, and app updates.
- Write technical designs and lead estimation and planning for projects spanning on-device apps, cloud services, and Toast hardware.
- Build reliable background services and safely deploy them across the device fleet using feature flags, staged rollouts, and monitoring.
- Lead Android application and OS upgrades for Toast hardware in partnership with Hardware and Firmware teams.
- Expand end-to-end automated testing on real Toast hardware using Robot Framework.
- Investigate complex production issues across the device fleet and partner with Customer Care and pilot customers during rollouts.
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Hardware, QA, and Software teams to build scalable, secure, maintainable systems.
- Use AI tools throughout development to improve design, coding, testing, debugging, and development velocity.
Requirements
- 6+ years of Android application development experience.
- Proficiency in a modern object-oriented language such as Kotlin or Java.
- Deep experience with Android architecture patterns and libraries including Hilt, AndroidX libraries, and Kotlin Coroutines.
- Strong understanding of Android application and service lifecycles, background work, and inter-process communication.
- Experience leading cross-functional projects with multiple engineering, product, QA, and design stakeholders from ideation through launch and production support.
- Ability to debug complex issues across app, framework, and OS layers using tools such as adb, logcat, and bug reports.
- Experience using AI tools throughout design, coding, testing, and debugging.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including technical design writing.
- Strong customer empathy and focus on building reliable tools for restaurant operators.
- Preferred experience includes Android software for devices, offline mode, battery impact, background services, Android framework or AOSP work, system services or system apps, Device Owner or Device Policy Controller APIs, mobile device management, enterprise device management platforms, large device fleet shipping, OTA updates, staged rollouts, and automated testing with Robot, UIAutomator, or other testing frameworks.
