Responsibilities
- Design, build, and own core execution-model components including state machines, lifecycle management, resource models, and failure semantics.
- Build reliable distributed systems that handle retries, restarts, partial failures, concurrency, and deterministic execution.
- Develop platform APIs and SDKs connecting workflows, agents, tools, and product surfaces, including versioning and compatibility.
- Implement idempotency, deterministic replay, compensating actions, data integrity, concurrency controls, rate limits, backpressure, sharding, partitioning, and workload isolation.
- Build security and governance capabilities including RBAC/ABAC, policy enforcement, auditability, and lineage.
- Deliver observability through distributed tracing, structured logs, metrics, evaluation hooks, and explainable agent-action trails.
- Own quality through design reviews, testing strategy, performance baselines, SLOs, incident response, and postmortems.
- Mentor engineers, contribute to design reviews, and establish engineering patterns across the platform.
- Staff-level candidates will lead architecture across teams and establish engineering standards.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building distributed or platform systems, including significant architecture experience across teams or domains.
- 4+ years owning mission-critical runtimes or workflow/orchestration systems.
- Deep expertise in durable execution, including state machines, event sourcing, saga or compensation patterns, idempotency, and delivery semantics.
- Production experience with security and governance, including authentication, RBAC, auditing, and policy.
- Hands-on observability experience, including trace correlation across asynchronous boundaries.
- Strong systems design experience across storage, queues, schedulers, event-driven architectures, and performance tuning under load.
- Expertise in at least one modern language such as Go, Rust, Java, or TypeScript, plus cloud-native stacks.
- Experience operating in regulated or high-assurance environments and a strong focus on correctness, clarity, and documentation.
- Strong technical judgment and ability to influence design decisions across engineering areas.
- Ability to incorporate advanced LLM capabilities into system design and platform architecture where appropriate.
- Preferred experience with Temporal, Cadence, AWS Step Functions, Argo, Airflow, serverless runtimes, OPA, secrets or KMS, PII/PHI controls, ML/LLM evaluation frameworks, tool/plugin architectures, HIPAA, audit readiness, or multi-tenant isolation.
