Staff Software Engineer
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Write production code as the primary contribution and maintain a high code-review standard.
- Lead the design and execution of broad-impact initiatives across Toast’s catalog and inventory platform and multiple teams.
- Design flexible, scalable backend systems that accommodate changing technical and product requirements.
- Build distributed, event-driven architectures and services using Java, Kotlin, and related technologies.
- Design data architectures and schemas using modern database systems.
- Partner with Product Managers, UX Designers, and stakeholders across the company to translate roadmap goals into scalable services.
- Mentor engineers, support team growth, and improve team effectiveness.
- Measure, maintain, and improve customer experience across functional and non-functional requirements.
- Support systems in production and contribute to continuous delivery.
- Use AI-powered engineering tools to improve development productivity, code quality, and technical decision-making.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience designing and delivering scalable backend systems.
- Deep, current hands-on coding ability and strong code-review skills.
- Proven technical ownership of complex projects delivered across multiple teams.
- Strong experience with distributed, event-driven architectures and microservices using Java, Kotlin, Scala, or similar object-oriented languages.
- Experience designing flexible systems that can absorb changing requirements without requiring a rewrite.
- Strong knowledge of data architecture, schema design, and modern database systems including Postgres and DynamoDB.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS.
- Strong experience with automated testing, continuous delivery, and production support.
- Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment and delivering value continuously.
- Ability to evaluate and validate AI-generated solutions critically.
