
Senior Machine Learning R&D Engineer – Matterport

Responsibilities
- Research, design, and train large-scale foundational models for 3D reconstruction and generative scene completion using Matterport’s proprietary spatial data.
- Advance neural rendering and novel view synthesis techniques for indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Develop diffusion-based, video-generation, and 3D-generation approaches to complete occluded regions, synthesize unseen viewpoints, and improve digital-twin realism.
- Design, implement, and optimize scalable training and inference pipelines for large multi-view datasets containing images, video, point clouds, and meshes.
- Translate research prototypes into production-ready systems integrated with Matterport’s capture and reconstruction platform.
- Define evaluation methodologies and benchmarks for reconstruction quality, view-synthesis fidelity, and generative plausibility.
- Collaborate with researchers, platform engineers, product managers, and software engineers to scope projects and deliver product capabilities.
- Contribute to the architecture and roadmap of Matterport’s foundational reconstruction model and broader ML research initiatives.
- Contribute to patents and publications and represent the work to the research community.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited, not-for-profit, in-person university or college.
- Experience in machine learning research and development focused on computer vision, 3D data processing, neural rendering, or generative modeling.
- Proficiency in PyTorch and strong programming skills in Python.
- Understanding of deep learning architectures, optimization techniques, and evaluation methodologies.
- Experience with NumPy and Pandas for data manipulation and analysis.
- Ability to conduct independent research, propose novel solutions, and implement them effectively.
- Strong problem-solving, verbal communication, and written communication skills.
- Preferred: Ph.D. or master’s degree in computer science, computer vision, machine learning, graphics, robotics, or a related quantitative field.
- Preferred: 5+ years of industry experience in applied ML research and development, especially training and shipping large models to production.
- Preferred: expertise in foundation or large-scale models and depth in neural rendering, generative modeling, or 3D computer vision.
- Preferred: experience with distributed or multi-GPU training, large-dataset curation, model-training infrastructure, and scaling large models and datasets.
- Preferred: publications at top-tier venues or significant open-source contributions.
- Preferred: experience mentoring junior engineers or leading technical projects and communicating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
