Responsibilities
- Design highly scalable, mission-critical brokerage systems for the Japan market.
- Develop and enhance middle- and back-office systems, including gRPC microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, and Japan-specific third-party vendor integrations.
- Enhance Alpaca’s core framework to support multiple languages, currencies, markets, and Japan-specific requirements.
- Collaborate with regional tech leads and global core teams through synchronous and asynchronous communication.
- Coordinate in Japanese with local regulators, vendors, partners, and business stakeholders and translate requirements into technical specifications.
- Troubleshoot incidents and reported bugs to maintain system integrity and performance.
- Participate in on-call rotations and address production issues during Japan business hours.
- Mentor teammates on engineering principles and practices and contribute to Japan-region engineering culture.
- Contribute to regional recruitment initiatives and cross-functional team projects.
- Support proactive 24x7 platform stability through regional operational reliability engineering.
Requirements
- Native or JLPT N1-level Japanese fluency with professional reading, writing, and communication skills is required.
- Business-level English fluency is required for meetings, design discussions, code reviews, and documentation.
- Proven experience designing and developing complex financial systems, preferably including double-entry accounting, is required.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, ledger structures, and transaction reconciliation is required.
- Experience building scalable, highly available financial applications handling multi-currency transactions is required.
- Familiarity with financial-market regulatory compliance is required, with Japan-related experience such as FIEA, FSA, JSDA, or JIPF preferred.
- Proficiency in at least one statically typed language such as Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, C#, Scala, or C++ is required.
- Experience with financial APIs, market-data integrations, and trade-settlement processes is required.
- Strong computer science fundamentals and software architecture experience are required.
- Experience with domain-driven design and event-driven design is required.
- The candidate must be able to work independently in a fully remote, globally distributed, fast-paced environment.
- Strategic thinking, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to translate technical concepts into business strategies are required.
- The candidate must be able to lead and troubleshoot incidents or bugs during Japan business hours.
- Go proficiency or willingness to ramp up quickly is preferred.
- Experience in Japanese financial services, Japanese market infrastructure such as JPX, JSCC, JASDEC, or major Japanese banks, and Japan-specific products such as NISA, iDeCo, tokutei-koza, or MyNumber is preferred.
- Startup experience, knowledge of emerging technologies, financial-markets interest, vendor-management or organizational-budgeting experience, and experience with global English-speaking teams are preferred.
