Responsibilities
- Provide technical vision, architectural direction, and hands-on engineering leadership for major distributed database initiatives.
- Own critical database components from architecture and design through implementation, testing, rollout, and ongoing operations.
- Design and develop production systems involving storage, transactions, replication, consensus, geo-distribution, and high-concurrency workloads.
- Lead architectural decisions and balance long-term platform strategy with pragmatic customer and business requirements.
- Improve scalability, latency, availability, reliability, and infrastructure efficiency across eBay-scale systems.
- Mentor engineers and technical leads, raise engineering standards, and develop technical leadership in the Bengaluru organization.
- Establish standards for architecture, design, code quality, testing, observability, automation, and operational readiness.
- Lead design and code reviews for critical platform capabilities.
- Partner with engineers, architects, engineering leaders, product managers, and customers to translate workloads and requirements into platform capabilities and roadmaps.
- Lead projects through exploration, prototyping, benchmarking, implementation, deployment, and production support.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and open-source solutions for advancing NuData’s architecture.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools to improve development velocity and quality.
- Communicate architectural decisions and technical tradeoffs to technical teams and engineering leadership.
- Build technical alignment across teams in Bengaluru, the U.S., China, and Ireland.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field with significant industry experience, or a PhD with equivalent experience building large-scale distributed systems.
- Significant hands-on experience architecting, building, and operating large-scale distributed databases, storage systems, or data infrastructure.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems and database architecture, including consensus, replication, consistency models, partitioning, fault tolerance, high availability, and geo-distribution.
- Strong knowledge of database internals, including storage and buffer management, write-ahead logging, multi-version concurrency control, lock management, query planning and execution, indexing, and database engines.
- Strong transaction-management expertise covering isolation levels, concurrency control, deadlock detection, crash recovery, replication, and high-availability or failover strategies.
- Expert-level programming experience in one or more languages such as C++, Java, Python, Scala, or equivalent languages.
- Strong computer science fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, concurrency, networking, operating systems, and software architecture.
- Extensive experience with object-oriented design, distributed programming, and large-scale relational or NoSQL database systems.
- Experience with modern infrastructure technologies and cloud-native environments, including Kubernetes and Docker.
- Ability to diagnose difficult production issues across software, storage, networking, and distributed-system boundaries and drive root-cause resolution.
- Demonstrated ability to set technical direction and influence architecture across multiple teams and organizations.
- Proven ability to lead large, technically complex initiatives and navigate architectural tradeoffs across globally distributed teams.
- Strong record of mentoring senior engineers and technical leads and raising engineering standards.
- Ability to produce high-quality architecture and design documents and build consensus without relying on organizational authority.
- Experience building production-grade software with AI coding agents while maintaining quality, availability, and maintainability.
- Ability to provide AI coding agents with appropriate context, specifications, constraints, and validation criteria.
- Hands-on experience delivering production software using AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Codex.
- Ability to lead effectively across organizational and geographic boundaries.
