VP – Distinguished Engineer of Generative AI Engineering
Slate Magazine3 days ago
Troy, MI, USAStaff+
Base Salary
$222k - $371k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design and own Slate’s enterprise-scale end-to-end GenAI platform, including context, data, model-serving, agent, and evaluation layers.
- Build and deploy production-grade GenAI agents across vehicle engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, software development, and go-to-market workflows.
- Develop physical AI systems for robotic process control, manufacturing quality assurance, predictive maintenance, sensor-data processing, and closed-loop production feedback.
- Construct proprietary knowledge, data, and context layers that support purpose-built models across the vehicle lifecycle.
- Establish evaluation frameworks, guardrails, observability, auditability, security, and compliance standards for production AI systems.
- Design multi-tenant model-serving architectures, real-time and edge inference pipelines, and infrastructure supporting thousands of internal users and integrated systems.
- Recruit and grow a lean team of GenAI engineers, MLOps engineers, and applied scientists while remaining hands-on with code, reviews, and architecture.
- Set technical standards, hiring expectations, and engineering practices for the GenAI organization and contribute to external technical communities when appropriate.
Requirements
- 15+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years shipping production GenAI systems and 7+ years in senior technical leadership.
- Bachelor of Science degree required; an MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated work recognized outside the candidate’s organization, including production systems built from scratch and operating at scale.
- Deep hands-on experience with LLM APIs including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini, as well as production deployment of open-source models.
- Experience with vector databases, agent orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and training domain-specific models.
- Experience building multi-agent systems with coordination protocols, failure isolation, human-in-the-loop escalation, evaluation frameworks, guardrails, and observability pipelines.
- Experience deploying AI on physical hardware such as robots, CNC machines, quality inspection systems, assembly-line sensors, or comparable industrial environments.
- Experience with manufacturing computer vision, closed-loop learning, robot-to-model feedback architectures, physical simulation, sensor fusion, multimodal data, and real-time inference under hard latency constraints.
- Experience with edge deployment architectures, intermittent connectivity, modern data stacks, vector stores, streaming data pipelines, and batch and real-time model consumption.
- Cloud architecture experience across AWS, GCP, or Azure, including cost modeling, capacity planning, managed-versus-self-hosted AI infrastructure tradeoffs, and enterprise-scale AI platforms.
- Experience designing multi-tenant model serving with cost isolation, quota management, workload prioritization, SLA support, and security and compliance controls.
- Experience creating SDKs, abstraction layers, and self-service platform tooling for internal teams.
- Physical AI experience in robotics, manufacturing, IoT, autonomous vehicles, or another domain with messy data, latency constraints, and physical failure consequences is preferred.
- Advanced degrees are preferred but exceptional publications, widely adopted systems, or research-level work may offset advanced-degree pedigree.
Benefits
- Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability insurance, vacation, and 401k benefits are offered.
- The successful candidate may be eligible for an equity program and/or discretionary annual incentive program.
- The position lists a base pay range of $222,431.00 to $370,719.00.
- The role is based within Slate’s vehicle and manufacturing organization, with no specific remote or office arrangement stated.
