Responsibilities
- Design and own database architecture for PostgreSQL-backed internal platforms, Slurm, NetBox, automation services, observability systems, inventory systems, and future control-plane services
- Define standards for high availability, replication, failover, backup and restore, point-in-time recovery, performance baselining, capacity planning, upgrades, access control, and operational security
- Operate and improve production PostgreSQL, MySQL, Percona, and adjacent database environments
- Manage database provisioning, configuration, upgrades, replication topologies, performance tuning, backup validation, disaster recovery testing, decommissioning, documentation, and runbooks
- Troubleshoot query latency, lock contention, replication lag, storage I/O bottlenecks, connection exhaustion, indexing and schema issues, capacity constraints, and backup or restore failures
- Support SlurmDBD, accounting data, job history, reporting queries, retention, scaling, backup, recovery, and operational reliability
- Support NetBox and source-of-truth database performance, lifecycle planning, data integrity, backup and restore validation, schema-impact review, and automation integrations
- Build deep observability for query performance, execution plans, index usage, replication health, locking, buffer/cache efficiency, storage latency, connection pools, and OS-level bottlenecks
- Create performance baselines, alerting standards, preventive monitoring, automation, and operational guardrails
- Automate database provisioning, configuration, backup verification, health checks, replication checks, permissions, upgrades, monitoring deployment, and runbook-driven recovery
- Contribute database modules, roles, and workflows to Ansible, CI/CD pipelines, and internal automation platforms
- Lead major database incidents, including triage, root cause analysis, coordination, impact analysis, postmortems, corrective actions, and remediation
- Mentor L4 and L5 engineers and provide senior technical review for database-impacting infrastructure and platform changes
Requirements
- 8+ years of production database engineering, database administration, or database architecture experience
- Strong hands-on PostgreSQL production experience
- Strong hands-on experience with MySQL, Percona, or equivalent relational database platforms
- Experience designing and operating highly available database systems with replication, failover, backup, restore, and disaster recovery validation
- Deep SQL performance tuning experience, including execution plan analysis, index design, query rewriting, schema optimization, lock contention troubleshooting, and storage/I/O analysis
- Strong Linux systems knowledge
- Experience supporting production incidents, performing root cause analysis, and improving database monitoring and observability
- Ability to work across infrastructure, DevOps, platform, and application engineering teams
- Ability to define standards, influence architecture, and mentor engineers without direct management authority
- Preferred experience with SlurmDBD, Slurm accounting databases, or HPC/AI infrastructure database workloads
- Preferred experience with NetBox or other infrastructure source-of-truth platforms
- Preferred experience with Percona XtraDB Cluster, ProxySQL, advanced MySQL/Percona architectures, and PostgreSQL HA tooling
- Preferred experience with Prometheus, Grafana, PMM, Splunk, eBPF/BCC, perf, strace, or similar tools
- Preferred experience supporting databases for SaaS, cloud, HPC, AI infrastructure, or large multi-tenant platforms
- Preferred experience with MongoDB, Oracle, SQL Server, or other secondary database platforms
- Preferred experience with database automation using Ansible, Terraform, CI/CD systems, or internal tooling
- Preferred experience with zero-downtime migrations, major version upgrades, and production database consolidation
