Staff Backend Engineer

Responsibilities
- Maintain and evolve the system core, APIs, and related backend components.
- Optimize data storage and backend systems for throughput, latency, and scalability.
- Drive architectural evolution and manage technical debt in alignment with the product vision.
- Adapt APIs and infrastructure for current and future AI/ML-driven workloads.
- Lead system-level refactoring and define and achieve performance benchmarks.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
- Promote an agentic engineering culture by leading by example.
- Collaborate closely with the Head of Engineering on product architecture.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
- Deep understanding of object-oriented programming, algorithms, and data structures.
- Extensive experience with relational database management systems, columnar databases, search engines, and other NoSQL technologies.
- Strong experience with messaging systems.
- Proven experience in agentic engineering and system-level refactoring.
- Expert-level Java or Kotlin skills.
- Ability to detect and resolve performance bottlenecks and define and achieve performance benchmarks.
- Ability to learn quickly in complex domains, with interest in life sciences, data science, and ML/AI applications.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills and fluent English.
- Preferred: knowledge of biology and genetics, experience with profiling, tracing, or performance tools, and familiarity with Python.
