Staff Site Reliability Engineer, Environment Automation

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement automation for provisioning and managing hundreds of isolated GitLab environments.
  • Troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters, cloud services, GitLab applications, failed deployments, crash loops, and scheduling conflicts.
  • Automate version upgrades, configuration rollouts, provisioning pipelines, and other operational workflows across tenants.
  • Build observability systems using Prometheus, ELK, and Grafana to monitor capacity, detect bottlenecks, and optimize resource consumption.
  • Lead incident response and postmortem efforts and establish operational standards that improve resilience.
  • Influence architecture for automation, scalability, operational excellence, and production readiness.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams and customers to resolve technical problems while maintaining service commitments.

Requirements

  • Proven experience operating and troubleshooting production workloads across multiple tenants or environments.
  • Deep understanding of distributed-system failures at scale and resilience engineering.
  • Strong hands-on Terraform experience, including workspace strategies, state management, and scalable infrastructure automation patterns.
  • Experience with Kubernetes in production, including diagnosing deployment failures, interpreting pod logs, debugging scheduling issues, and handling rollbacks.
  • Ability to read and debug Go and/or Ruby code and identify performance and scalability issues.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure for many customers or environments simultaneously, including isolation, scaling, monitoring, and incident response.
  • On-call experience and the ability to lead technical discussions and incident resolution efforts.
  • Strong collaboration skills with internal or external customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with GitLab for infrastructure automation, collaboration, and operational workflows.
  • Experience with Ansible and templating tools such as Jsonnet is a plus.
