Responsibilities
- Own major projects in the dual execution stack so DuckDB can process queries locally or in the cloud.
- Build cloud platform capabilities for dynamic resource assignment across workloads and instance sizes.
- Improve embedded database performance, distributed execution, and DuckDB internals.
- Lead cross-functional work with frontend, platform, infrastructure, and support teams.
- Debug issues, analyze real usage patterns, and prioritize impactful improvements.
- Identify architectural challenges and remove system bottlenecks.
- Mentor teammates, document expertise, and improve engineering practices.
- Collaborate with DuckDB Labs to align APIs and shape future DuckDB development.
Requirements
- Experience building and shipping complex backend systems.
- Fluency in a backend or systems language such as C++, Rust, Java, or similar.
- Foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, networking, and low-latency distributed systems.
- Ability to scope and lead projects spanning multiple collaborators and cross-functional dependencies.
- Ability to mentor peers and contribute to a collaborative, high-agency engineering environment.
- Hands-on DuckDB experience is a strong plus.
- Interest in open-source collaboration and working directly with DuckDB Labs is valued.
