Staff Software Engineer - Intelligence Platform
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Own the technical vision, architecture, and production rollout of the Intelligence Platform.
- Develop data-intensive and distributed systems using Kotlin or Java, Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, and AWS.
- Build privacy-conscious data products with aggregation, anonymization, access controls, and auditability enforced in code.
- Create reusable platform components and scalable data-access flows for internal tools and AI agents.
- Partner with Marketing, Product, Legal, Investor Relations, Data Science, and Data Platform to translate business goals into a technical roadmap.
- Establish reliability and quality standards while mentoring engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on technical leadership.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership of projects involving multiple teams.
- Experience building data-intensive or distributed systems and reliable data products or platforms used by other teams.
- Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented programming language.
- Experience with cloud-native data platforms on AWS.
- Strong SQL and data-modeling skills for large datasets.
- Experience handling sensitive data through aggregation, anonymization, or access controls.
- Ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly to non-engineering partners.
- Experience with Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, Snowflake, or Databricks is a bonus.
