Responsibilities
- Define the Production Engineering engagement model, including scope, collaboration, and handoffs with product and infrastructure teams.
- Personally lead the most technically complex reliability engagements involving sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale.
- Set technical standards and hiring calibration for Production Engineering at Canva.
- Shape pairing strategy and develop production engineering capability across staff and mid-level engineers.
- Influence product and engineering leadership to address production readiness upstream in the roadmap.
- Define and track metrics for incident severity, incident duration, and successful feature launches.
- Write software and modify production systems to improve reliability, efficiency, resilience, and engineering velocity.
Requirements
- Experience owning reliability in large-scale distributed systems.
- Experience leading or shaping an engineering function that works across team boundaries.
- Hands-on coding experience at senior technical levels and the ability to advise on highly complex problems.
- Cross-organizational influence based on trusted technical judgment.
- Deep production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
- Practical experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, consistency tradeoffs, consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.
- Knowledge of Linux internals, including process scheduling, memory, I/O, and networking.
- Experience building observability tooling such as tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
- Production experience with Kubernetes, including understanding of the scheduler.
- Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes and resolving performance issues.
- Production experience with AWS at scale.
- On-call and incident response experience.
- Nice to have enterprise SaaS experience, JVM internals expertise, and multi-region or sharding experience.
