Responsibilities
- Develop core infrastructure and shared functionality underpinning Elasticsearch.
- Design and implement horizontally scalable Elasticsearch features and APIs.
- Automate development workflows and integrate agentic applications into developer workflows.
- Investigate and resolve difficult performance, concurrency, stability, and operational issues.
- Improve the operation and observability of Elasticsearch cloud systems.
- Collaborate with the Elasticsearch team, users, and supporting open-source projects.
- Support support engineers with complex technical problems.
- Lead cross-team projects and own operational investigations through successful resolution.
Requirements
- Strong core Java skills, including the standard library, data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
- Proficiency in algorithms and data structures.
- Experience designing APIs and reasoning through technical tradeoffs.
- Low-level Java experience with concurrency, parallelism, and classloaders.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems and practices, including Buildkite and Argo CD.
- Experience leading large-scale projects across engineering teams.
- Ability to own projects from technical design through implementation and completion.
- Proven use of AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while retaining ownership of outcomes.
- Ability to collaborate across teams, work autonomously, and communicate effectively in a distributed environment.
- Bonus: knowledge of JDK internals, Java memory model, garbage collection, database load, caching, observability and telemetry solutions such as OpenTelemetry, Go, containers, Kubernetes, and Java build tools including Gradle and Maven.
- Bonus: experience working on a platform or developer productivity team.
