Responsibilities
- Build and operate the storage and compute foundation for Apple’s high-performance search and Apple Intelligence systems.
- Design and support large-scale distributed systems involving databases, storage platforms, or data processing frameworks.
- Process petabyte-scale batch data using MapReduce, Spark, or similar technologies.
- Implement cloud-native compute orchestration on AWS and Kubernetes.
- Work with columnar and lakehouse formats, storage internals, indexing, metadata and manifest management, and query performance tuning.
- Orchestrate workflows and schedule resources on shared Kubernetes clusters.
- Support key-value or online serving stores and multi-cloud data movement.
- Drive cross-team efforts while working independently.
Requirements
- Strong coding skills and a solid computer science background in algorithms, data structures, and distributed systems.
- At least 5 years of experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience with petabyte-scale batch data processing using MapReduce, Spark, or similar tools.
- Proficiency in cloud-native architectures and compute orchestration on AWS and Kubernetes.
- MS or PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
- Deep familiarity with Parquet and Iceberg and the judgment to choose between them at scale is preferred.
- Experience with storage internals, workflow orchestration, resource scheduling, key-value or online serving stores, and multi-cloud data movement is preferred.
- Experience with search indexing, machine learning, or NLP is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and drive cross-team efforts.
