Base Salary
$185k - $490k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve Bazel-based build and test workflows across a large polyglot monorepo.
- Design and maintain Starlark rules, macros, toolchains, and integrations for reproducible and hermetic builds.
- Improve Buildkite CI queue time, build time, cache hit rates, test sharding, retries, and flake isolation.
- Build affected-target detection, dependency graph analysis, test selection, caching, batching, and scheduling systems to reduce unnecessary CI work.
- Improve local development workflows for reproducing CI behavior and debugging build failures.
- Operate build infrastructure across Docker/OCI images, Kubernetes runners, cloud resources, and remote cache/execution systems.
- Instrument build and CI systems with metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and analytics.
- Partner with product, infrastructure, and research engineering teams to onboard projects, debug build issues, and remove bottlenecks.
- Apply AI tools to CI failure analysis, flaky-test debugging, pull-request triage, automatic remediation, and developer-facing explanations.
- Own system reliability and participate in an on-call rotation for critical developer infrastructure.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience building developer infrastructure or tooling.
- Hands-on experience with Bazel, Buck, Pants, Gradle, or similar build systems, including hermetic builds, dependency graphs, caching, sandboxing, and remote execution.
- Experience building or operating CI systems at scale, with attention to build time, queue time, test flakiness, and developer trust.
- Ability to write production software for internal platforms and handle design, debugging, operations, and long-term ownership.
- Ability to debug distributed build and CI failures across source control, dependency management, containers, runners, remote caches, test frameworks, and service infrastructure.
- Strong developer-experience focus and ability to reduce team friction and operational toil.
- Pragmatic approach to building platform adoption paths that are faster, clearer, and more reliable.
- Clear cross-team communication and ability to turn ambiguous productivity problems into concrete technical plans.
- Interest in applying AI to developer infrastructure while maintaining quality, reliability, and safety.
