Responsibilities
- Build credibility with R&D leaders and lead strategic, first-of-a-kind R&D engagements.
- Lead opportunities from pre-sales through delivery, including scoping, qualification, readiness assessment, architecture, staffing, estimates, success criteria, and phased delivery planning.
- Partner with account, advisory, customer success, product engineering, and services teams to align and deliver engagements.
- Translate scientific, engineering, and business challenges into backlogs, workflows, architectures, research objectives, and success metrics.
- Design and deliver MVPs, proofs of concept, integrations, simulations, data pipelines, and production-ready solutions.
- Own technical workstreams across qualification, discovery, design, implementation, build, and post-go-live optimization.
- Evaluate emerging AI capabilities and provide scientific and technical oversight.
- Create reusable patterns, reference architectures, playbooks, technical assets, and best practices, while providing feedback to influence the Microsoft Discovery roadmap.
Requirements
- 5-10 years of experience in science, engineering, technology consulting, product management, data science, machine learning, AI, or a related field.
- Direct experience in materials science or industrial R&D, including areas such as chemistry, polymers, advanced materials, formulation science, computational materials, specialty chemicals, manufacturing R&D, or energy materials.
- Strong understanding of scientific methods, experimentation, data-driven decision-making, and R&D workflows.
- Experience applying AI, machine learning, generative AI, data science, simulation, or advanced analytics to business or scientific problems.
- Ability to work effectively with technical experts and executive stakeholders and influence without authority.
- Strong communication, storytelling, stakeholder-management, problem-solving, and cross-organizational collaboration skills.
- Preferred: PhD or MS, or equivalent experience, in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Preferred: understanding of data science and machine learning, including algorithms, exploratory data analysis, model development, and evaluation.
- Preferred: familiarity with Azure services such as Foundry and AI Search, agentic AI architectures, knowledge graphs, microservices or containers, and scientific high-performance computing.
- Preferred: experience with product management, agile delivery, backlog management, matrixed organizations, innovation programs, and tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Codex.
