Responsibilities
- Own backend solutions from understanding partner needs through design, implementation, testing, operation, and production improvement.
- Make technical decisions that balance delivery speed, reliability, and maintainability.
- Design and maintain interfaces across system boundaries affecting the wider payment journey.
- Strengthen testing and observability, diagnose production issues, and improve service dependability.
- Collaborate with product managers, partner banks, and engineers across Wise.
- Share domain knowledge and support other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and mentoring.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience building or substantially contributing to large-scale distributed systems.
- Strong backend engineering experience with relational databases, event-driven systems, and an object-oriented language.
- Ability to understand customer problems, explain why solutions matter, and use product metrics or data to assess impact.
- Ability to work autonomously through ambiguity and involve relevant experts when needed.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, including explaining technical decisions and contributing to colleagues’ growth.
- Useful additional experience includes Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL, payments, financial technology, funding, settlement, foreign exchange, and product metrics.
Benefits
- Starting salary of £111,000–£145,000 plus RSUs.
