Base Salary
$223k - $278k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test the Tax platform supporting tax compliance for millions of people.
- Scale Gusto’s Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications.
- Own and drive technical strategy and roadmap for the team’s domain area.
- Guide projects end-to-end, from feature specifications and system evolution through execution and maintenance.
- Influence and guide multiple teams through complex scaling, refactoring, and optimization work.
- Build services, tools, and APIs that improve engineering productivity.
- Create guardrails that enable safe, compliant, accurate, stable, and reliable use of agentic AI with tax concepts.
- Identify and prioritize long-term investments in foundational systems and architecture.
- Lead improvements to incident-response processes, tooling, and culture.
- Mentor and develop engineers through pairing, code review, knowledge sharing, and effective AI usage.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Compliance, Operations, and other cross-functional teams.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of engineering experience.
- Experience designing and developing robust distributed systems using multiple general-purpose programming languages.
- Experience influencing and guiding multiple teams on scaling, refactoring, and optimizing legacy products.
- Experience architecting, building, and testing large-scale production code.
- Experience building fault-tolerant, mission-critical software.
- Experience building products in highly regulated and high-risk domains.
- Ability to communicate technical complexity and facilitate informed tradeoffs.
- Ability to build maintainable, structured, and well-documented code.
- Experience working in collaborative, test-driven environments.
- Experience with current AI tools, including LLMs and agents, and their benefits and shortcomings.
- Experience embedding AI into development workflows and mentoring engineers on effective AI usage.
- Preferred experience in payroll, taxes, or compliance.
- Bonus experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React.
