Responsibilities

Design, build, scale, deploy, and maintain backend systems and data pipelines for Via’s GIS and mapping platform.
Develop and maintain Python-based pipelines that ingest, process, and transform OpenStreetMap and other geospatial datasets.
Model, store, and query geospatial data using PostgreSQL and PostGIS, including road topology, zones, polygons, and points.
Optimize database schemas, spatial indexes, and queries for large datasets and high-throughput workloads.
Build and maintain backend services and APIs that expose geospatial and mapping data to applications and data consumers.
Own features end to end, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance.
Improve reliability, observability, and performance through monitoring, alerting, benchmarking, and optimization.
Contribute to architectural decisions, technical standards, and best practices while mentoring other engineers.
Collaborate with product, infrastructure, data, frontend, and backend teams on system boundaries, data contracts, and cross-team initiatives.

6+ years of backend software development experience using one or more programming languages such as Python, Go, or Java.
Strong experience with Python in production systems is advantageous.
Strong experience designing and operating distributed systems in production environments.
Solid understanding of databases, data modeling, and performance optimization across SQL and NoSQL systems.
Experience with PostgreSQL and PostGIS or other spatial databases is advantageous.
Experience with cloud-based infrastructure and production-grade services.
Experience with geospatial systems, event-driven architectures, AWS, Kubernetes, or high-scale data pipelines is advantageous.
BSc in Computer Science or equivalent is required.
