Base Salary
$295k - $345k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design and build the S3-compatible object store, metadata and indexing systems, data placement and tiering, and multi-tenant isolation.
- Own the technical strategy, multi-year architecture, build-versus-buy decisions, and migration from cloud object storage.
- Evolve the control plane for elastic scaling, autonomous healing, self-service provisioning, and zero-downtime tenant moves.
- Operate the bare-metal fleet, including cluster lifecycle, upgrades, rebalancing, failure domains, hardware planning, and capacity planning.
- Profile and optimize critical data paths to improve tail latency and cost per byte.
- Establish design reviews, benchmarks, failure drills, post-incident retrospectives, and reliability practices targeting 4+ 9s.
- Automate testing, rollout safety, observability, and autoscaling.
- Mentor engineers and collaborate with security, analytics, and product teams.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering or a relevant field.
- Deep experience building and operating large-scale distributed storage, such as object stores, blob stores, or distributed file systems, at petabyte scale or beyond.
- Hands-on production experience with object storage platforms, including data placement, rebalancing, erasure coding, cluster tuning, and upgrades at scale.
- Strong skills in C++, Go, or Rust.
- Deep understanding of durability, replication, geo-replication, consistency trade-offs, and blast-radius containment.
- Experience shipping high-throughput, low-latency services on bare-metal, on-premises fleets with strong observability.
- Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into clear roadmaps and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- Passion for automation, rigorous testing, and data-driven decisions.
- Preferred experience includes upstream contributions to open-source storage projects, S3 API compatibility at scale, NVMe/HDD tiering, or migrating large workloads from public-cloud object storage.

- Annual base salary range of $295,250–$345,040 USD for roles based at headquarters in San Mateo, California.
- Full-time employees are eligible for equity compensation and company benefits.
- Office-based roles are onsite Tuesday through Thursday, with optional presence Monday and Friday unless otherwise noted.
