Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership for the evolution, reliability, and performance of production Lustre file systems at petabyte and billion-object scale.
- Research, architect, develop, maintain, integrate, and sustain parallel file-system software and related storage solutions.
- Develop and lead evaluation, design, integration, and deployment of software fixes, upstream patches, and local enhancements.
- Diagnose and resolve complex system-wide performance, scalability, reliability, and architectural issues in production storage systems.
- Review upstream and local code changes, establish adoption criteria, and lead integration into production Lustre deployments.
- Lead cross-functional storage-system initiatives while evaluating technical tradeoffs, risks, lifecycle impacts, and alternative architectures.
- Establish technical roadmaps, architecture, and engineering priorities for parallel file-system software.
- Provide strategic technical guidance to management, stakeholders, partner organizations, and external technical communities.
- Mentor and develop technical staff and share storage expertise across the organization.
- Work off-hours as needed to resolve production problems.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q-level security clearance; Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
- Significant subject-matter expertise in parallel file-system internals, including substantial Lustre experience.
- Significant experience in a production high-performance computing environment with serious downtime and end-user consequences.
- Advanced proficiency developing systems software in C in a team environment, with additional proficiency in C++, Rust, or Python.
- Highly advanced knowledge of Linux operating systems and kernel interfaces, including configuration, networking, and system security.
- Advanced debugging and problem-solving skills for highly parallel, multithreaded, and multi-component storage systems.
- Advanced proficiency with Linux debugging and inspection tools such as strace, perf, gdb, /proc, and eBPF.
- Expert communication, collaboration, technical-influence, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects or major workstreams, establish technical direction, and influence multidisciplinary decisions.
- Preferred qualifications include a master's degree, open-source storage contributions, technical publications or conference presentations, and experience with large-scale storage architecture or technical roadmaps.
- Preferred experience includes S3, object storage, OIDC/OAuth, metadata extraction and cataloging systems, and integrating traditional storage with cloud-first technologies.
