Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve infrastructure architecture, tooling strategy, and long-term technical decisions.
  • Plan infrastructure layouts, select components, test systems, and deploy infrastructure.
  • Work with declarative tooling including NixOS, k3s, and Terraform on primarily bare-metal servers with some cloud infrastructure.
  • Plan and lead the construction of bare-metal infrastructure for deployment in low- to middle-income countries.
  • Guide critical technical decisions, mentor engineers, and drive the long-term vision for reliable systems across multiple countries.
  • Scope, plan, delegate, and hold engineers accountable for technical outcomes.
  • Participate in hiring, candidate evaluation, and interviews.
  • Handle internal and external communication.
  • Optionally travel to understand operational needs and set up hardware in local data centers.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of infrastructure or systems engineering experience, including 1–2 years in a lead role.
  • Ability to scope, plan, and delegate technical work and maintain accountability for outcomes.
  • Broad knowledge of Linux internals, networking, databases, containers, hardware performance, and security.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including version control, readable code, testing, robust design, and basic data structures and algorithms.
  • Working proficiency in English at least C1 in spoken and written communication, with typing speed of at least 45 words per minute.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, social intelligence, and emotional resilience for working across cultures, time zones, and high-stakes situations.
  • Bonus experience with NixOS, Kubernetes, Terraform, bare-metal hardware selection and on-site setup, ethical hacking, programming or mathematics competitions, or relevant public health, agriculture, and sustainable development knowledge.
