Responsibilities
- Design and build contract-first APIs using OpenAPI/Swagger, REST, GraphQL, gRPC, and event-driven patterns documented with AsyncAPI.
- Develop reusable API components, policies, plugins, templates, domain APIs, and experience APIs.
- Implement and configure proxies, routes, plugins, policies, and traffic-management controls on Kong Gateway and Kong Konnect.
- Deploy and operate gateway components on Kubernetes using the Kong Ingress Controller and GitOps workflows.
- Implement authentication, authorization, API security, identity-provider integrations, secrets management, and certificate management.
- Build automated contract, functional, integration, security, and performance tests and maintain CI/CD pipelines for API delivery.
- Integrate static analysis, dependency scanning, SBOM generation, and API specification validation into delivery workflows.
- Instrument APIs for observability, contribute to incident response and root-cause analysis, and support API consumers with onboarding and troubleshooting.
- Write clean, tested, peer-reviewed code in Git and collaborate with integration, application, data, cybersecurity, and architecture teams.
Requirements
- Typically five to eight years of professional experience in API or backend software engineering.
- Proficiency in at least one modern backend language, with Python or Node.js and TypeScript preferred, and Java with Spring Boot also accepted.
- Deep understanding of REST architectural principles and GraphQL query language.
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases and writing optimized queries.
- Strong contract-first API design experience with OpenAPI, versioning, and backward compatibility.
- Hands-on experience with an API gateway or management platform such as Kong, Apigee, Azure API Management, or AWS API Gateway.
- Practical experience implementing OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and TLS-based API security.
- Working knowledge of containers, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines, with strong debugging skills across application, network, and gateway layers.
- Clear written and verbal English communication skills, including API documentation for engineers.
- Preferred qualifications include GraphQL federation, gRPC or Protocol Buffers, Kafka or Solace, enterprise-system integrations, developer portals, regulated-environment delivery, relevant certifications, and a bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
