Responsibilities
- Design and implement Distributed Service Bus features including gossip protocols, OSPF-style link-state routing, and flow control.
- Build and extend the gRPC proxy layer for communication across the DSB mesh.
- Debug distributed networking issues across tactical radios, UDP/TCP transports, mesh routing, deployed assets, and cloud infrastructure.
- Deploy DSB to new hardware platforms and support migrations from legacy communication buses.
- Optimize protocols for bandwidth-constrained RF links through compression, prefix routing, and priority-based QoS scheduling.
- Write RFCs and technical design documents for protocol features and API surfaces.
- Build deterministic simulation harnesses using production code in reproducible test environments.
- Improve observability with Prometheus metrics, Grafana dashboards, and dsbtool CLI tooling.
- Contribute to communication-layer security through packet signing with ECDSA, FIPS compliance, and end-to-end encryption.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Proficiency in Rust, C, C++, or Go.
- Strong understanding of TCP/UDP, socket programming, MTU, multicast, TLS, and mTLS.
- Experience building or maintaining distributed systems such as message buses, RPC frameworks, or consensus protocols.
- Familiarity with asynchronous programming models including async/await, event loops, and futures.
- Comfort working with Protocol Buffers and/or gRPC.
- Ability to read packet captures and use tcpdump, Wireshark, or similar network debugging tools.
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
- Preferred: production Rust experience; gossip, epidemic broadcast, or peer-to-peer overlay network experience; OSPF, IS-IS, or BGP familiarity; deterministic simulation or property-based testing experience; and Kubernetes or container orchestration familiarity.
