Responsibilities
- Design highly scalable, mission-critical brokerage systems for the Japan market.
- Develop middle- and back-office systems, gRPC microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, and third-party vendor integrations.
- Enhance the core framework to support multiple languages, currencies, markets, and Japan-specific requirements including NISA, MyNumber, withholding tax, and JP-GAAP accounting.
- Translate requirements from Japanese regulators, vendors, partners, and business stakeholders into technical specifications for global engineering teams.
- Collaborate with regional technical leads and cross-functional teams across time zones.
- Troubleshoot incidents and bugs, participate in on-call rotations, and support production issues during Japan business hours.
- Mentor teammates, contribute to engineering practices, support regional recruitment initiatives, and foster Alpaca culture in Japan.
- Participate in goal setting and architect autonomous solutions aligned with strategic objectives.
Requirements
- Native or JLPT N1-level Japanese fluency and business-level English fluency are required.
- Proven experience designing and developing complex financial systems, preferably with double-entry accounting, ledger structures, and transaction reconciliation.
- Experience building scalable, highly available financial applications handling multi-currency transactions.
- Familiarity with financial-market regulatory compliance, preferably including Japanese frameworks such as FIEA, FSA, JSDA, or JIPF.
- Proficiency in at least one statically typed language such as Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, C#, Scala, or C++.
- Experience with financial APIs, market-data integrations, and trade-settlement processes.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, software architecture experience, communication skills, and problem-solving ability.
- Experience with domain-driven design and event-driven design.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote global team and lead or troubleshoot incidents during Japan business hours.
- Experience in the Japanese financial services sector and with JPX, JSCC, JASDEC, Japanese banks, NISA, iDeCo, tokutei-koza, or MyNumber is preferred.
- Go proficiency, startup experience, vendor management, organizational budgeting, and experience with global English-speaking teams are preferred.
