Responsibilities
- Build and extend the database management control plane for Shopify’s global YugabyteDB platform.
- Develop systems for database provisioning, backup verification, configuration management, migrations, and operational automation.
- Build database safety, reliability, and performance guardrails for application teams.
- Write production code, operate production systems, and debug distributed-systems failures.
- Manage and operate Shopify’s globally distributed database platform at scale.
- Participate in a required on-call rotation and provide technical mentorship.
Requirements
- Ability to write high-quality code in a high-level programming language such as Go or Ruby.
- Experience or interest in configuration management and comfort working in a Linux shell.
- Experience with relational databases, PostgreSQL internals, distributed databases, or database reliability engineering.
- Experience with a cloud platform such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience with SRE or DevOps practices, or software engineering interest in infrastructure work.
- Strong technical mentorship skills and commitment to psychological safety.
- Experience working on a remote or distributed engineering team.
- Commitment to quality, technical excellence, and results.
- Willingness to learn the team’s current technology stack; exact component experience is not required.
- Ability to complete a live pair-programming interview using the candidate’s own IDE.
