Responsibilities

  • Design and build Nubank’s backend payments gateway for POS and Tap to Pay transactions.
  • Develop internal Payment SDKs and gateway capabilities to replace partner-provided functionality.
  • Design authorization, routing, clearing, settlement, reversal, offline, and error-handling flows.
  • Architect payment systems around NFC, EMV readers, printers, connectivity limits, offline behavior, and latency-sensitive environments.
  • Integrate with acquirers, processors, and payment networks while increasing Nubank’s ownership of these interactions.
  • Define long-term acquiring and gateway architecture for a 3–5 year roadmap and support new products and geographies.
  • Lead design reviews, whiteboard sessions, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing across backend engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with embedded and mobile teams, external experts, vendors, and acquirer engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Staff-level backend engineering experience designing and operating high-scale, mission-critical systems, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong experience with payments, POS, acquiring backends, transaction processing, and acquirer or payment-network connectivity.
  • Hands-on experience with ISO 8583 or similar card-payment protocols, including authorization, reversals, settlement, and offline or queued transactions.
  • Experience working with POS, embedded, payments, or hardware teams and understanding peripheral, connectivity, offline, and latency constraints.
  • Proven experience designing and evolving gateways or switches connected to multiple acquirers or processors.
  • Technical leadership experience mentoring engineers, leading design sessions, and defining long-term technical direction.
  • Strong communication skills and resilience when handling incidents, complex cross-team situations, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with PCI DSS v4.0 and designing secure Cardholder Data Environment isolation.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid model in Brazil and collaborate in English and Portuguese.
  • Experience internalizing POS or acquiring stacks, Tap to Pay or SoftPOS solutions, and Brazilian card-present payment regulations is preferred.
