Base Salary
$177k - $262k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead projects or systems by coordinating the activities of other engineers.
- Determine technical tasks and guide other engineers’ implementation work.
- Design and build rule-based systems, custom DSLs, decision engines, rule execution systems, and DSL runtime environments.
- Develop Python backend services for collaborative rule authoring, APIs, and platform tooling.
- Build and operate Kafka-based streaming and event-driven architectures.
- Design, deploy, and operate Kubernetes environments, including deployment pipelines, scaling strategies, and cluster operations.
- Build and operate cloud-native applications on GCP using services including GKE and Dataproc.
- Develop rule-authoring, review, and deployment interfaces with React, including governance workflows.
- Drive architecture direction, lead cross-team initiatives, mentor engineers, influence technical strategy, and align stakeholders.
- Improve engineering structures, processes, and standards while balancing time, quality, complexity, and risk.
- Represent PayPal in interactions with partners, customers, and industry organizations.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six or more years of hands-on Java experience building decision engines, rule execution systems, and DSL runtime environments.
- Three or more years designing and implementing Python backend services.
- Four or more years of deep working knowledge of Apache Kafka ecosystems and stream processing.
- Three or more years designing, deploying, and operating Kubernetes environments.
- Three or more years building and operating cloud-native applications on GCP, including GKE and Dataproc.
- Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases, BigQuery, and Bigtable.
- Experience designing and building rule-based systems with custom DSLs using ANTLR or equivalent parser-generator frameworks.
- Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or Copilot.
- Working knowledge of agentic architectures, tool use, MCP, multi-step workflows, and evaluation.
- Proven technical leadership, architecture ownership, cross-team initiative leadership, mentoring, and stakeholder alignment.
- Knowledge of frontend development with React and governance workflows such as approvals, versioning, audit trails, and role-based access control.
