Responsibilities
- Define and influence long-term engineering and architectural direction across complex technology domains.
- Solve critical technical challenges and lead large-scale initiatives spanning multiple teams and technology domains.
- Establish software design, architecture, engineering-scale standards, reusable patterns, and guardrails.
- Champion DevSecOps, CI/CD, automated testing, engineering automation, reliability, observability, monitoring, recovery, and operational excellence.
- Embed security, quality, and risk management throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Accelerate responsible AI-powered engineering and advise on strategic technology trade-offs.
- Constructively challenge technical solutions and translate complex engineering concepts for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Coach and mentor engineers and technology leaders while building communities focused on learning, collaboration, and ownership.
- Represent and strengthen CommBank’s engineering identity and reputation.
Requirements
- Experienced Chief Engineer, Principal Engineer, Distinguished Engineer, or senior technology leader from large and complex technology environments.
- Exceptional depth in software design and architecture with strong computer science and engineering fundamentals.
- Experience designing and building large-scale, reliable, and secure software systems.
- Strong knowledge of modern DevOps/DevSecOps, CI/CD, automated testing, reliability, and observability practices.
- Ability to combine strategic technology thinking with hands-on engineering judgment and influence across teams without formal authority.
- Understanding of AI and data opportunities, especially their potential to transform engineering.
- Strong judgment, curiosity, communication, and ability to balance innovation, customer outcomes, engineering quality, and risk.
- Commitment to coaching, mentoring, and growing engineers.
- Preferred experience in large-scale regulated or complex environments, distributed cloud-based and high-availability systems, APIs, event-driven architecture, cloud technologies, containerisation, infrastructure as code, AI-assisted software engineering, engineering productivity tooling, test automation, observability, reliability engineering, and major technical transformation.
