AI/ML Engineer – Manufacturing Vision Inspection Systems

Responsibilities
- Design and implement computer vision models for defect detection, segmentation, and classification.
- Accelerate model training using synthetic data, active learning, augmentation, and domain randomization.
- Package and deploy models with Docker and Kubernetes while implementing version control, rollback, observability, and MLOps practices.
- Optimize inference for embedded hardware and maintain real-time performance across changing lighting, optics, and surface conditions.
- Integrate vision systems with PLCs, encoders, triggers, and industrial networks using OPC-UA, MQTT, and REST.
- Lead defect image collection, annotation workflows, model validation quality gates, drift detection, calibration, backup and restore, and root cause analysis.
- Develop and evaluate deflectometry, reflection, multi-camera, and optical AI technologies through plant trials.
- Lead inspection booth software deployments from concept through Start of Production and support North American rollout.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, engineering, automation, IT, and AI teams across Toyota organizations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of experience in industrial machine vision and edge AI deployment.
- At least 3 years of AI/ML experience with camera-based vision systems.
- Experience managing the full model lifecycle, including data collection, labeling, validation, rollout, monitoring, and retraining.
- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of ONNX Runtime, TensorRT, and embedded hardware optimization.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, shutdowns, and multiple shifts, with up to 30% overtime.
- Ability to travel up to 30% within the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and other manufacturing locations.
- Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree, optical physics and production deep learning research, software project management, AI safety and optical fault-handling, synthetic data generation, high-speed inline inspection, vision-based process control, and IIoT messaging expertise.
