Responsibilities
- Improve and modernize the long-running PHP game server codebase without allowing its quality to regress.
- Determine technical execution order, dependencies, safe incremental releases, and personal versus delegated scope.
- Write production code while considering load, failure modes, testing strategy, and feature-flagged delivery.
- Set technical standards through implementation, code reviews, design documentation, and mentoring of mid-level engineers.
- Partner with engineering leadership on roadmap decisions and technical tradeoffs.
- Influence and improve the PHP admin tooling stack, including its jQuery and Vue.js front end.
- Investigate root causes, identify broader systemic issues, and make behavior-preserving improvements to a live-service product.
Requirements
- At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including significant time as a senior or lead engineer on a production system.
- Deep PHP experience, including Composer, dependency injection containers such as Symfony DI or an equivalent, and static analysis.
- Ability to prioritize both technical execution and personal or team scope.
- Experience writing production software with attention to load, failure modes, testing, and safe releases.
- Technical leadership or mentoring experience with other engineers.
- Strong communication, critical thinking, code review, design, and engineering judgment skills.
- Preferred experience with large-scale architectural refactors on legacy PHP systems.
- Preferred production experience with metrics, tracing, profiling, and structured logs.
- Preferred experience in live-service games or another high-throughput, revenue-critical consumer service.
- Experience with Vue.js, jQuery, and AWS or similar cloud technology is a bonus.
