Frontend Engineer — React Native (Expo / JSI) (Contract to Hire)

- Build and maintain features in the Expo/React Native employee mobile app from UI through native module integration.
- Write and debug JSI, TurboModule, and iOS/Android native module code where managed Expo APIs are insufficient.
- Use AI agents and MCP-based tooling as part of the daily engineering workflow for writing, debugging, and testing code.
- Own performance-sensitive flows including list rendering, animations, cold-start time, and native bridge profiling.
- Implement and harden push notifications, deep linking, and background/foreground behavior for iOS and Android.
- Manage Expo SDK upgrades and native dependency compatibility issues.
- Maintain EAS Build and CI/CD workflows, including automated test pipelines in EAS Workflows.
- Write Jest and React Native Testing Library coverage for hooks, screens, and native module wrappers.
- Triage and resolve crash and stability issues surfaced through Sentry.
- Collaborate with backend engineers on REST/OpenAPI contracts and with design on native-feeling UI patterns.
Requirements
- 4+ years of professional React Native experience, including apps built or ejected from Expo through bare workflow, config plugins, or EAS Build.
- Hands-on experience with JSI, TurboModules, or native modules written in Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin, or Java.
- Strong TypeScript and React fundamentals with the ability to debug across the JavaScript/native boundary using Xcode, Android Studio, Flipper, or React Native DevTools.
- Experience with push notifications, deep linking, and background task handling on iOS and Android.
- Familiarity with mobile CI/CD, including EAS Workflows, Fastlane, or similar tools, and app store release processes.
- Ability to work independently in an early-stage startup and make progress through ambiguity.
- Practical testing experience with Jest and React Native Testing Library.
- Comfort working from REST/OpenAPI contracts shared with Python/FastAPI backends and Next.js web applications.
- Preferred experience with Reanimated, Skia, or other native-driven animation libraries.
- Preferred experience instrumenting and triaging crash and performance data in Sentry or similar tools.
- Preferred familiarity with Next.js, React, and TypeScript for occasional web contributions.
- Consumer or field-worker app experience at meaningful scale and prior early-stage startup ownership are preferred.
