Base Salary
$134k - $224k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead engineering for the delivery of high-quality, maintainable software for complex applications.
- Design, build, and improve search systems using lexical retrieval methods such as BM25 and TF-IDF and semantic or vector-based retrieval.
- Develop and optimize hybrid retrieval, reranking, and learning-to-rank strategies to improve search relevance.
- Evaluate search quality using offline metrics including NDCG, MRR, and Precision/Recall, and run online experiments.
- Build tooling that makes relevance experiments repeatable and measurable.
- Maintain production software, triage issues, and resolve operational problems.
- Mentor developers, conduct code reviews, participate in pair programming, and lead knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Partner with Product Managers, Architecture, IT Management, Data Science, Product, and Analytics on technical solutions and relevance measurement.
- Promote sensible engineering defaults and continuous delivery practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a similar field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer designing, developing, testing, and deploying scalable software applications.
- Expert programming skills in Java and Python.
- Knowledge of distributed system design and integration patterns, including sharding, replication, indexing, query routing, and caching in distributed search platforms.
- Hands-on experience with embeddings and vector search, including ANN indexing and tradeoffs among relevance, latency, and cost.
- Experience tuning search and AI-based customer experiences using user behavior and measured outcomes.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies, DevOps practices, and AI-assisted development tools.
- Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate complex problems and practices.
