Base Salary
$220k - $405k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and own billing and monetization systems supporting Perplexity’s paid products.
- Lead features from problem definition and technical design through implementation and launch.
- Build billing API abstractions for new SKUs, pricing models, and monetization experiments.
- Operate subscription, invoicing, and usage-based billing systems for consumer and enterprise plans.
- Improve reliability through tiered SLOs, monitoring, alerting, and proactive detection of revenue-affecting issues.
- Partner with Finance, Data Science, Growth, Security, Support, and go-to-market teams on accurate, auditable, compliant billing and global payment optimization.
- Build internal tools that help Support and Finance diagnose and resolve billing issues.
Requirements
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Direct experience building or scaling billing, payments, subscription, or monetization systems.
- Deep familiarity with payment processors, including subscriptions, invoicing, disputes, refunds, and webhooks.
- Experience building in-house billing solutions and strong backend engineering skills in Python.
- Experience with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL, and data-informed prioritization.
- Strong product judgment and ability to translate user and stakeholder problems into effective technical solutions.
- Track record of cross-functional collaboration with Finance, Support, or Growth stakeholders.
- Preferred qualifications include 2+ years with Stripe APIs and SDKs, usage-based or metered billing experience, Apple and Google Play in-app purchase billing, growth experimentation, PLG or self-serve SaaS monetization, pricing experiments, A/B testing platforms, full-stack development with Next.js, React, and TypeScript, compliance-heavy billing, and startup experience.
