Responsibilities
- Define and champion a 12–18 month platform strategy, author and approve RFCs, and align cross-functional teams.
- Provide architectural leadership for privacy-compliant, multi-region, and multi-tenant environments while establishing API governance and access-control standards.
- Oversee complex system designs involving backward compatibility, phased migrations, data integrity, eventual consistency, and caching optimization.
- Set and uphold SLOs and error budgets while leading capacity planning, performance optimization, incident management, root-cause analysis, and postmortems.
- Drive security, privacy, regulatory compliance, cost optimization, and operational standards.
- Contribute hands-on through high-impact code reviews and performance optimizations.
- Partner with PMs, TPMs, and teams across Search, Data, Checkout, and other organizations to deliver reusable platform components and standards.
- Mentor Senior and Staff engineers, lead design reviews, and raise engineering quality and technical standards.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional backend development experience, excluding internships.
- 7+ years of Java, Kotlin, or Spring-based service development experience and 3+ years of architecture leadership experience.
- Experience designing and operating web-scale microservices with hands-on AWS and Kubernetes experience.
- Deep expertise diagnosing mission-critical system failures, identifying root causes, and implementing preventive measures.
- Strong communication and leadership skills for aligning stakeholders and driving complex technical decisions across organizations.
- Preferred: experience designing and operating AuthN and AuthZ infrastructure and services, including access control, monitoring, detection, and response.
- Preferred: experience with large-scale distributed systems handling global multi-region traffic.
- Preferred: hands-on experience with data pipelines and event processing using Kafka, Spark, Cassandra, and Airflow.
- Preferred: experience building observability frameworks with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana.
- Preferred: expertise in JVM performance tuning, cache and storage design, API schema versioning, and testing.
- Preferred: experience designing platforms, frameworks, or SDKs adopted across multiple product teams.
