Principal Software Engineer – Platform Engineering

Responsibilities
- Drive service-side re-architecture and shared-library changes required by the cell-based architecture.
- Decompose hundreds of services into subsystems with independent lifecycles.
- Identify and resolve horizontal scalability gaps across regions, cells, and deployment models.
- Own the environments application configuration management framework end to end.
- Own services and libraries supporting private and isolated cloud deployments.
- Design and implement changes directly in product services in partnership with their owning teams.
- Define architecture patterns and reference implementations for product teams.
- Make configuration a runtime concern rather than embedding it in service code.
- Partner with Cloud Platform, SRE, and DevEx on service and platform boundaries.
- Raise architectural standards, mentor Staff and Senior engineers, and embed AI tooling into daily development.
Requirements
- Deep hands-on architecture experience with microservice estates numbering in the hundreds.
- Strong Java and Python skills, with willingness to contribute to other technology stacks.
- Experience decomposing large service estates into independently evolving subsystems.
- Proven experience designing for horizontal scalability across regions and independent deployments.
- Experience with cell-based, multi-tenant, or multi-region architectures.
- Strong cloud-native background with Kubernetes, containers, and AWS.
- Experience externalizing configuration and removing environment coupling from application code.
- Demonstrated ability to implement significant changes in code owned by other teams.
- A record of identifying architectural limits before they become incidents.
- Ability and desire to design, lead, influence, and deliver ambitious technical roadmaps.
- Experience with Vespa is preferred.
- Experience with private, isolated, on-premise, or air-gapped deployments is preferred.
- Experience designing and stewarding shared libraries or internal frameworks used by many teams is preferred.
