Responsibilities

  • Reduce Azure Cosmos DB request-unit consumption by optimizing queries, indexes, partitioning, point reads, batched reads, and storage choices.
  • Prioritize and deliver targeted, measurable performance fixes quickly, using larger redesigns only when smaller changes are insufficient.
  • Fix hot partitions and size limits through partition-key, document, indexing-policy, and API-contract changes.
  • Execute zero-downtime data migrations and repartitioning across all environments, including sovereign clouds.
  • Move large, binary, unbounded, or rarely queried content to Azure Blob Storage or comparable storage when appropriate.
  • Reduce database pressure through batching, request coalescing, caching, retry budgets, load shedding, and graceful degradation.
  • Establish throttling budgets and caching strategies with product and partner teams.
  • Own telemetry, dashboards, alerts, and measurable targets for RU usage, partition skew, availability, and latency.
  • Develop AI skills and use agentic tools to identify Cosmos DB issues and accelerate engineering fixes.
  • Serve as a Designated Responsible Individual in the 24/7 on-call rotation, lead data-tier incident response, mentor engineers, and represent the team with the Azure Cosmos DB product group.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technical field and 6+ years of technical engineering experience with coding, or equivalent experience.
  • Coding experience in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Ability to pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check and other applicable Microsoft, customer, or government security screenings.
  • Preferred: master’s degree with 8+ years of experience, bachelor’s degree with 12+ years of experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: 4+ years building or operating large-scale distributed databases, including partitioning, indexing, and query performance.
  • Preferred: experience addressing throttling, hot partitions, cross-partition queries, data migrations, repartitioning, rate limits, quotas, and noisy-neighbor isolation in production.
  • Preferred: deep hands-on Azure Cosmos DB knowledge covering RUs, physical partitions, hierarchical partition keys, indexing, point reads, ReadMany, change feed, consistency levels, multi-region accounts, autoscale, SDK retries, and diagnostics.
  • Preferred: proficiency in C# and .NET plus experience with Azure Functions, Service Bus, Azure Cache for Redis, and API Management.
  • Preferred: experience with generative AI, foundation models, AI skills, and agentic engineering tools.

Benefits

  • The role is based in Redmond, Washington and requires working in the office at least 3 days per week.
  • The position includes a 24/7 on-call rotation.
  • The position offers a U.S. base pay range of $142,800–$274,800 annually, with a separate San Francisco Bay Area and New York City range of $188,000–$304,200 annually.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
