Responsibilities
- Build and evolve Nova’s query planning, execution, distributed compute, columnar storage, encoding, compression, caching, and cluster resource-management capabilities.
- Design support for additional warehouse-imported data types and high-throughput, concurrent automated query workloads.
- Drive infrastructure cost, performance, latency, throughput, and memory improvements at scale.
- Profile and optimize JVM performance, including garbage collection, memory management, concurrency, and data layout.
- Build guardrails and observability for identifying expensive or pathological queries.
- Improve reliability by addressing systemic failure modes, participating in on-call incident response, and implementing durable architectural fixes.
- Contribute to capacity planning, safe rollouts, and operational tooling.
- Lead multi-month projects, participate in architecture discussions and code reviews, collaborate cross-functionally, and mentor engineers.
Requirements
- 7+ years of industry experience in backend or infrastructure engineering with depth in distributed data systems.
- Hands-on experience building or extending analytical or OLAP systems, query engines, columnar storage, large-scale data processing frameworks, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated success driving significant cloud infrastructure cost optimization across compute, storage, or network.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems, partitioning, replication, consistency, failover, data structures and algorithms, concurrency, multithreading, and performance optimization.
- Production experience with AWS, Kafka, Redis or ElastiCache, Kubernetes, Terraform, or strong equivalents.
- Proficiency in Java, C++, or Python.
- Demonstrated technical influence through design leadership, cross-team alignment, and mentoring.
- Preferred: experience with Druid, ClickHouse, Presto/Trino, BigQuery, Snowflake, columnar formats such as Arrow, Parquet, or ORC, product analytics or experimentation platforms, event-driven data systems, open-source data infrastructure, or published data-systems work.
- Preferred: deep JVM expertise in garbage-collection tuning, profiling, and production-scale memory optimization.
