Responsibilities

  • Build data pipelines using Google Cloud billing exports and Cloud Monitoring telemetry to create queryable fleet usage and utilization data in BigQuery.
  • Attribute shared costs and usage across Google Kubernetes Engine clusters to teams and services using cost-allocation foundations such as OpenCost.
  • Develop capacity and demand tooling by machine family and region to support reservation planning and prevent capacity shortages.
  • Build internal applications that help engineers and budget owners understand and manage their cloud footprint.
  • Establish data models, services, engineering standards, and technical direction for a growing capability.
  • Partner with Finance, product teams, service owners, and infrastructure engineers to translate needs into technical designs.
  • Use artificial intelligence in daily engineering workflows to improve efficiency and outcomes.

Requirements

  • Design and ship production backend services owned end to end rather than only operating existing systems.
  • Demonstrate strong SQL skills with large datasets and experience building and maintaining data pipelines and data models.
  • Have working knowledge of a major cloud platform, preferably Google Cloud, including compute services, Kubernetes, and pricing and billing models.
  • Be proficient in a general-purpose programming language for tooling and pipelines; Go and Python are suitable, and Ruby is used across GitLab product code.
  • Break new problems into milestones and drive them to production with light direction.
  • Communicate clearly in a remote, asynchronous environment.
  • Helpful qualifications include experience with OpenCost, Kubecost, Google Kubernetes Engine cost allocation, FinOps practices or certification, cost or capacity modeling, forecasting, anomaly detection, Terraform, Looker, Looker Studio, Grafana, founding engineering work, or artificial intelligence in engineering workflows.

Benefits

  • Benefits supporting health, finances, and well-being.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Team Member Resource Groups.
  • Equity compensation and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Growth and Development Fund.
  • Parental leave.
  • All GitLab roles are remote, with some location-based eligibility requirements; the team works asynchronously.
