Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable backend services using Python, FastAPI, Pydantic, asyncio, TypeScript, NestJS, and Node.js.
- Own API contracts, versioning, and MCP tool surfaces used by AI agents.
- Design data models, schemas, migrations, and query performance strategies across PostgreSQL and analytical stores.
- Build asynchronous, event-driven processing with workflows, queues, and scheduled jobs.
- Integrate LLM and agent runtimes into production services with deterministic and testable boundaries.
- Implement authentication, authorization, secure service-to-service integrations, caching, retries, timeouts, and graceful degradation.
- Lead technical decisions, architecture, code quality, code reviews, and engineering best practices.
- Ensure scalability, fault tolerance, observability, testing, and production debuggability.
- Own services end to end, including CI/CD pipelines, containerized Kubernetes deployments, and production debugging.
- Partner with product, design, frontend, and data/AI teams to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Use and improve AI-assisted development workflows with tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of backend engineering experience building and operating production services at scale.
- Strong proficiency in Python with FastAPI or an equivalent asynchronous framework, or Node.js/TypeScript with NestJS, with willingness to work in both ecosystems.
- Experience designing scalable backend architectures, service boundaries, data models, APIs, authentication, authorization, and distributed systems.
- Strong knowledge of asynchronous and concurrent programming, workflow engines, queues, schedulers, and long-running distributed execution.
- Experience with relational or analytical databases, schema design, migrations, query optimization, and large-scale data performance.
- Experience with system performance, reliability, security, unit testing, integration testing, end-to-end testing, and observability tooling.
- Comfort owning Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Production experience integrating LLM or model APIs into backend services and managing latency, cost, failure modes, and nondeterministic outputs.
- Hands-on daily experience with AI development tools and the ability to validate, debug, and improve generated code.
- Understanding of prompt engineering for engineering workflows and strong product, technical, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Enough frontend fluency in React and TypeScript to reason about API consumption.
- Preferred experience with LangGraph, LangChain, the Model Context Protocol, Temporal, Airflow, Step Functions, data platforms, analytics products, or BI tools.
