Responsibilities
- Set technical direction and long-term strategy for cloud, networking, infrastructure, delivery, and reliability platform capabilities.
- Lead architecture recommendations and technical engagements from early design through production operation.
- Design, build, deploy, and operate platform services, APIs, CLIs, controllers, workflows, and automation.
- Build self-service systems for environment provisioning, service deployment, infrastructure management, and operational response.
- Create standard service-development and delivery workflows using templates, libraries, policy-as-code, and reusable platform components.
- Design and operate cloud, compute, storage, identity, network, container, and infrastructure building blocks across public clouds and regions.
- Improve infrastructure provisioning, service connectivity, software delivery, observability, capacity planning, performance, failure handling, and automated recovery.
- Define and use service-level indicators, SLOs, error budgets, and production-readiness standards.
- Lead or coordinate significant incident response, postmortems, and follow-through improvements.
- Reduce operational toil through measurement, automation, and elimination of repetitive work.
- Influence engineering standards through design reviews, technical writing, prototypes, education, and collaboration.
- Mentor engineers, develop technical leaders, and improve platform engineering practices across Gemini.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering, infrastructure engineering, SRE, or equivalent experience with substantial production-system ownership.
- Strong software engineering skills in Go, Python, TypeScript, Rust, or a similar language, with experience building services, automation, CLIs, APIs, or developer tools.
- Experience operating distributed systems in production, including failure diagnosis, capacity management, performance improvement, high availability, and recovery design.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, networking, compute, storage, deployment platforms, or related infrastructure domains.
- Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and Terraform or an equivalent infrastructure-as-code system.
- Experience with Kubernetes, EKS, GKE, AKS, Docker, or Nomad, including deployment, networking, security, and troubleshooting.
- Experience managing cloud network security controls such as network firewalls, DNS filtering, and network segmentation.
- Experience designing CI/CD and automated delivery systems covering testing, deployment, progressive rollout, rollback, and change validation.
- Practical observability experience with metrics, logs, traces, alerting, dashboards, and production health models; OpenTelemetry familiarity is valuable.
- Working knowledge of SLOs, error budgets, incident response, blameless postmortems, and operational-toil reduction.
- Experience with high-availability architectures, capacity planning, failure recovery, and operational tradeoffs at scale.
- Experience building secure-by-default systems and collaborating on identity, access control, secrets, supply-chain security, and policy enforcement.
- Experience with build tooling such as Bazel or Buck2.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and domains, including data-intensive, event-driven, or AI/ML workloads.
- Track record of setting technical direction, leading architecture across teams, and influencing without direct authority.
- Experience mentoring engineers, developing technical leaders, and communicating technical tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong technical communication and leadership skills.
