Base Salary
$120k - $261k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead embedded firmware development, debugging, and fixes for silicon and system-on-chip issues.
- Own investigations into firmware crashes, boot and reset failures, hangs, memory corruption, and hardware/software interaction issues across MAIA and Cobalt.
- Correlate firmware logs, silicon error records, crash dumps, operating-system and driver traces, configuration, and fleet telemetry to isolate failure mechanisms.
- Develop reproducible experiments, diagnostic firmware, and tooling to distinguish firmware defects from silicon, hardware, and software causes.
- Build scalable analysis and triage automation for failure bucketing, signature detection, cohort comparisons, and regression detection.
- Apply statistical analysis and AI-assisted methods to prioritize investigations and reduce manual analysis, validating results against independent evidence.
- Drive mitigations and permanent fixes, verify them through regression testing and post-deployment telemetry, and improve instrumentation and test coverage.
- Document troubleshooting guidance and mentor engineers while collaborating across firmware, silicon, hardware, operating-system, and fleet teams.
Requirements
- Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field plus 1+ year of technical engineering experience; or a master’s degree plus 4+ years; or a bachelor’s degree plus 5+ years; or equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and government security-screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
- Ability to satisfy export-control eligibility requirements by providing proof of citizenship, U.S. residency, or another protected status.
- Preferred: 8+ years of professional experience in embedded-system design, development, integration, validation, or system-level debugging.
- Preferred: experience with cross-layer root-cause analysis using logs, crash dumps, or telemetry; C/C++ firmware debugging; scripting; and automated diagnostic, test, CI/CD, and regression pipelines.
- Preferred: experience debugging complex embedded systems involving boards, FPGA, emulation, or simulation environments and managing production or fleet issues through corrective action and verification.
- Preferred: experience with PCIe, memory subsystems, I2C, SPI, silicon bring-up, firmware initialization, JTAG, GDB, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, Python, KQL/SQL, statistical methods, and AI-assisted analysis.
- Preferred: experience mentoring engineers, documenting troubleshooting methods, and collaborating across firmware, silicon, hardware, operating-system, and fleet teams.
Benefits
- The typical U.S. base pay range is USD $119,800-$234,700 per year; the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area range is USD $160,200-$261,000 per year.
- Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
- The position is open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until filled.
